Social Proof & GDPR: WordPress Privacy Checklist

Version note: product settings in this guide were checked against the TrueProof 2.4.0 release on September 17, 2026. New-install defaults and upgrade behavior are distinguished below.

Privacy Considerations for Social Proof

Social proof is one on-site trust signal whose effect varies by audience. But for established WordPress and WooCommerce store owners, there’s a quieter question hiding behind every notification bubble: where is that data coming from, and is showing it legal? Under the GDPR, an order confirmation or a new signup isn’t just marketing fuel, it’s personal data. Mishandle it and a conversion tactic becomes a compliance liability.

TrueProof, built by KarmaPower, s.r.o., is designed to surface recent activity with privacy-conscious defaults. Site owners should assess its configuration with their DPO or legal adviser and measure conversion impact on their own site.

Privacy Questions to Check in Social-Proof Plugins

Review each notification tool for these potential data-protection issues:

  • Full names and locations exposed in public-facing pop-ups, often without any lawful basis or customer expectation.
  • Data piped to third-party servers for processing, creating a cross-border transfer and a new data processor you now have to document.
  • Fabricated activity presented as if it were real, which can create data-accuracy concerns and may violate applicable advertising or consumer-protection rules.
  • Heavy tracking scripts that load before consent and quietly profile visitors.

Any one of these can create privacy or regulatory work. TrueProof includes defaults intended to reduce those risks, but site owners remain responsible for assessment and configuration.

Built-In Name Anonymisation

TrueProof 2.4.0 identity controls: new installations default to Fully anonymous: real events display “Someone” with no city or country. Short name shows a first name and surname initial when available, plus location; a single-field name remains as stored. Full name shows the stored public name and location. Email-shaped name values are suppressed in every mode. Upgrades retain the previous shortened-name or full-name setting until an administrator changes it. Open Settings → TrueProof → Privacy, select Fully anonymous (recommended), save and inspect /wp-json/trueproof/v1/events in a logged-out browser. The setting controls public output; it does not rewrite the underlying WooCommerce order.

The privacy choices affect the public REST response as well as the visible bubble. Check both before publishing, especially after an upgrade. The anonymous WooCommerce notification guide shows exactly which identity fields are suppressed.

Local event processing and limited licence validation

TrueProof processes order, signup and review data used for notifications within your WordPress installation and does not send those records to TrueProof or an external analytics service. When Pro is used, the plugin periodically sends the licence key and site URL to wptrueproof.com for activation, validation or deactivation.

Document that limited validation flow in your privacy information and assess the configuration against your own legal obligations.

Vanilla JavaScript and a consent-aware setup

TrueProof’s frontend uses vanilla JavaScript with no jQuery dependency. Measure its page-load impact on the target site and document the data flows used by your configuration. The audited TrueProof frontend did not include behavioural-profiling or fingerprinting logic. Audit the complete site separately for other scripts, data flows and consent requirements.

It reads supported sources already operated by the site. Test visual compatibility with the target theme and separately document the Pro licence-validation flow. The audited plugin reads supported source events and did not include visitor-profile building logic.

Honest Data: Real Mode and a Clearly Labelled Simulation Mode

TrueProof separates Real Data Mode from Simulation Mode. Real Data Mode pulls only genuine, verifiable activity:

  • WooCommerce orders
  • Easy Digital Downloads purchases
  • New user registrations
  • Approved reviews and comments

For brand-new stores with no traffic yet, TrueProof offers Simulation Mode for setup and preview. The Demo badge is always shown in Simulation Mode. Site owners remain responsible for using Simulation Mode lawfully. Switch to Real Data Mode when you want notifications to represent genuine events.

That distinction is deliberate. Presenting simulated data to customers as real may violate applicable advertising or consumer-protection rules. The always-visible Demo badge helps reduce the risk of confusion, but lawful use remains the site owner’s responsibility.

Why honest social proof is easier to assess

Privacy and conversion effects should be evaluated separately. Invented activity can create trust and legal risks. Genuine, recent activity is easier to substantiate. Measure how TrueProof notifications affect your own funnel and review the privacy configuration for your use case.

Pricing That Scales With You

Privacy-conscious social proof

TrueProof 2.4.0 offers fully anonymous output by default for new installations, locally processed notification sources and an always-visible Demo label for Simulation Mode. Supported notification-source records are processed on your WordPress site. During normal use without licence activation, the plugin’s own code makes no third-party requests. Pro licence activation, validation and deactivation send the licence key, home URL and requested action to wptrueproof.com, but not the notification-source records; the service also receives standard network metadata. Site owners remain responsible for their configuration and obligations.
