Easy Digital Downloads Sales Notifications: TrueProof Pro Setup
Scope: this guide describes the stable TrueProof 2.4.0 source code. The anonymous EDD example was checked on October 4, 2026 using synthetic API fixtures. This is a setup reference, not an independent store case study or an installed-EDD compatibility benchmark.
Short answer: TrueProof Pro can display recent completed Easy Digital Downloads purchases as notification bubbles on the same WordPress site. Install TrueProof, activate a Pro or Agency licence, enable the EDD source in Real Data Mode, review privacy and placement, then inspect the public output. The built-in EDD message says “bought a product”; it does not include a download title, price or order number.
When this is worth adding
This workflow fits a digital-download store that already has genuine completed purchases and wants a restrained recent-activity message. It is not useful when there is no eligible activity, when disclosing purchase activity would be inappropriate, or when you need product-specific event matching, inventory warnings or a marketing automation suite.
For WooCommerce orders rather than EDD, start with the free WooCommerce setup guide. EDD purchase activity is a paid TrueProof source; installing Free alone does not unlock it.
What you need before starting
- WordPress 6.0+ and PHP 8.0+ for TrueProof.
- Easy Digital Downloads active on the same site, with the EDD order or legacy payment API available.
- An active TrueProof Pro or Agency licence and at least one authorized completed purchase within your look-back window.
- A staging environment for test purchases. Check the official EDD documentation for your installed version before using its test gateway; do not create an unnecessary live charge.
Configure the EDD source
- Install TrueProof from WordPress.org. A new installation leaves the widget disabled until you configure it.
- Open Settings → TrueProof → License, enter your purchased key and choose Activate. Activation contacts wptrueproof.com with the key, site URL and licence action.
- Set Data mode to Real Data. Under Real data sources, select Easy Digital Downloads sales. Deselect other sources if this first check should contain only EDD events.
- Select a Look-back window that contains your known completed purchase and a restrained Max events value.
- Under Privacy, select Fully anonymous (recommended). New 2.4.0 installs default to this; upgrades preserve their previous choice.
- Start with Front page only, configure position and timing, enable the widget, and save. Verify the storefront while logged out before expanding the display scope.
Verify the output rather than guessing
A checked anonymous example
The released 2.4.0 event builder returned the following fields for a synthetic recent completed purchase, with only the EDD source selected and Fully anonymous enabled. A second fixture outside the 30-day look-back window was excluded. In the example below, the numeric time field is omitted because it depends on the source purchase time; the actual event also contains that Unix timestamp.
{
"name": "Someone",
"location": "",
"action": "bought a product",
"source": "edd",
"sim": false
}
A visitor-facing message combines “Someone bought a product” with a relative time. It does not identify which font, template or other download was bought. This is a code-level check with mocked EDD API responses, not a screenshot from a paying customer or proof of additional sales. The same test confirmed that the EDD source returns no event without an active paid licence.
Open /wp-json/trueproof/v1/events on your store in a logged-out browser. In fully anonymous mode, an EDD event has name equal to “Someone”, an empty location, the generic action “bought a product”, a source timestamp and sim: false. Translations can change the human-readable wording. These are expected fields from the released code, not a claim that your installation has passed a test.
Compare the event time with an authorized source purchase, then inspect the actual bubble on desktop and mobile. Do not publish screenshots containing a licence key, purchaser identity, cookies or administrative URLs. Read the plugin data-flow and privacy notes before choosing more identifying output.
Why a completed purchase might not appear
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Licence and integration | The EDD source requires an active paid licence and EDD’s API. A locked source is not a rendering problem. |
| Status and date | The EDD order path requests status complete; the legacy payment path requests publish. Events outside the look-back window are excluded. |
| Event limit | The released source fetches a limited recent set. Other enabled sources are merged, sorted by time and capped; newer registrations or reviews can displace an older purchase. |
| Cache and REST | The event cache lasts three minutes. External caches or security layers can separately alter or block the REST response. |
| Page scope and scripts | An eligible response does not make every page eligible for the widget. Check placement rules and delayed JavaScript separately. |
The shared layer-by-layer notification diagnostic explains REST, cache and browser checks. Its WooCommerce-specific status instructions do not replace the EDD statuses above.
Important boundaries
- TrueProof does not add the EDD download title to this built-in notification, match each event to the currently viewed download, or provide per-URL targeting.
- Selected-context rules cover WordPress page types. The dedicated Products context is for WooCommerce products, not EDD download posts. Do not assume it will target an EDD product page.
- There is no built-in conversion analytics or A/B test engine. Use a separate measurement setup; a notification impression is not a purchase.
- A truthful purchase event is not a promise of improved conversion. Keep Simulation Mode’s visible Demo label and never substitute invented activity for missing sales.
Decide whether you need Pro
Check fit before paying: a generic anonymous purchase message may fit a homepage, but if showing the download title or matching events to the viewed product is essential, the current EDD integration is not a fit. Read the version-specific installation instructions; current stable 2.4.0 activates Pro with a key in the same plugin. Do not replace it with an unreleased migration build.
Pro is €49/year for up to five sites; Agency is €149/year for up to 999 sites. Paid plans renew annually until cancelled and applicable EU VAT may be added at checkout. See the current plans and terms and activation and billing guide. Start by confirming product fit, not by assuming the licence will generate new orders.
Help us validate the EDD workflow
Have an EDD store and a specific recent-activity need? Tell us about your use case: whether you need a download title, where the message should appear, and whether you would consider the current Pro plan at €49/year if it meets that need. You can answer without buying or sending customer records, keys or administrative access. A request is not a commitment that we will build a feature or provide a free paid licence. For the free WooCommerce pilot, use the separate staging checklist.
Source evidence: released event queries and public fields, display-context matching and paid-source gating.
